I have compiled a list of Professional Associations, Organizations, and Guilds for Writers. Through a lot of research, I have tried to include all the major ones. Writers associations, guilds and organizations can bring you many benefits. However, like everything else, you must research each organization before you become a member to be sure it is exactly what you are looking for.

Academy of American Poets at Poets.org
From their website: "Launched in 1996, Poets.org is the award-winning website of the Academy of American Poets. Visitors to Poets.org will find thousands of poems as well as hundreds of poet biographies, essays, interviews, and poetry recordings—with new material being added constantly. Also available are resources such as the National Poetry Map, a national events calendar, and poetry lesson plans for teachers. Poets.org receives a million visitors each month, making it the most popular site about poetry on the web."
American Book Producers Association
From their website: "The American Book Producers Association was founded in 1980 as the trade association for independent book producers, also called packagers, in the United States and Canada. Members of this rapidly growing profession produce, from concept through finished product in all formats, a wide variety of titles for trade and other publishers as well as for corporations, non-profits, and other organizations."
American Christian Fiction Writers
From their website: "Our Mission Statement: To promote Christian Fiction through developing the skills of its authors, educating them in the market, and serving as an advocate in the traditional publishing industry."
American Crime Writers League
From their website: "The American Crime Writers League was formed in the late 1980s by Ed Gorman and Robert Randisi, who wanted a private forum for exchanging ideas, complaining about almost everything, and trying to understand this decidedly wacky business.
Here's your chance to find out what some of the major names in mystery fiction--from those who write about cozy cats to those who walk the mean streets--have in the bookstores today. You can discover new authors who are not yet household names but intend to be."
American Medical Writers Association
From their website: "The American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), founded in 1940, is the leading professional organization for writers, editors, and other communicators of medical information. The association offers a highly regarded continuing education program, including distance learning and a certificate program; an annual conference featuring prominent speakers, discussion sessions, and workshops; networking opportunities through the annual conference and chapter activities; job services, including Jobs Online and a Freelance Directory; a Web site with comprehensive information, member discount opportunities, and listserves; and theAMWA Journal, an indexed, peer-reviewed publication."
American Society of Journalists and Authors
From their website: "Founded in 1948, the American Society of Journalists and Authors is the nation's professional organization of independent nonfiction writers. Our membership consists of more than 1,400 outstanding freelance writers of magazine articles, trade books, and many other forms of nonfiction writing, each of whom has met ASJA's exacting standards of professional achievement."
Asian Americans Journalists Association Online
From their website: "Founded in 1981, AAJA has been at the forefront of change in the journalism industry. AAJA’s mission is to provide a means of association and support among Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) journalists; provide encouragement, information, advice and scholarship assistance to AAPI students who aspire to professional journalism careers; provide to the AAPI community an awareness of news media and an understanding of how to gain fair access; and, research and point out when news media organizations stray from accuracy and fairness in the coverage of AAPIs."
Association of Author's Representatives
From their website: "The Association of Authors' Representatives is a not-for-profit membership organization. We are active in all areas of the publishing, theater, motion picture and television industries and related fields."
Association of Educational Publishers
From their website: "The Educational Press Association of America was founded in 1895 by a small group of editors to exchange information and to promote open expression of educational opinion. For more than 100 years, it existed as a university-supported organization, most recently on the campus of Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.
As technology grew, publishing expanded from print to multimedia. So in 1995, the board decided that the Association should be expanded to reflect the changing publishing industry. Today, the organization, renamed The Association of Educational Publishers, is supported by nearly 400 print and digital publishers of all sizes and in all media."
Association of Writers and Writing Programs
From their website: "AWP provides community, opportunities, ideas, news, and advocacy for writers and teachers. We support over 34,000 writers, 500 college and university creative writing programs, and 100 writers' conferences and centers."
Association of Young Journalists and Writers
From their website: "The Association of Young Journalists and Writers is a non-profit organization with its mission as promoting reading, writing, journalism, and serving the community. Since the association went online, it sought to materialize its mission by helping young writers and journalists get published in the media. The writer submits his or her writing to the website and upon approval will be added to the website. This writing will then be available for newspapers, magazines, publishers and other media to be able to peruse. And then the publications would be able to buy these pieces from their respective authors for publication. And, of course, our extensive library of articles is available for other writers to read and learn from."
Australian Society of Authors
From their website: "The Australian Society of Authors is the peak professional association for Australia's literary creators. Our members are biographers, illustrators, academics, cartoonists, scientists, food and wine writers, children’s writers, ghost writers, librettists, travel writers, romance writers, translators, computer programmers, journalists, poets and novelists."
Authors Guild
From their website: "The Authors Guild has been the published writer's advocate for effective copyright, fair contracts, and free expression since 1912."
Authors League Fund
From their website: "Since 1917, the Authors League Fund has been helping professional writers and dramatists who find themselves in financial need because of medical or health-related problems, temporary loss of income or other misfortune.
The Fund gives open-ended, interest-free, no-strings-attached loans. These loans are not grants or scholarships meant to subsidize personal writing projects. (It should be kept in mind that many of the Fund’s resources come from other professional writers, agents, and publishers).
Most of those we help suffer severe health problems but have inadequate or no insurance; some face eviction; many are older writers whose income has ceased through no fault of their own. The Fund exists to help professional writers continue their careers, even their lives, with dignity—however unfortunate their immediate circumstances—by providing interest-free loans, many of which are never repaid."
